Found cat acting mean and growling. Is it rabies or just stress?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 9 lbs

So this cat has been outside for a few days. He’s my cat and we just found him.. is it likely he could have rabies? He’s vocal, which he’s always been. But lately he’s been mean. Not towards me necessarily but when I pick him up he grows.. not like he’ll attack me but like hes mad.. he also growls at the other cats in my house. Could this be rabies or just because he’s mad that he’s forced to stay inside? He’s going to get a rabies shot Thursday.

I guess it's possible, but not probable. It could be related to fear, anxiety, stress, pain, neurologic disease, etc. I would recommend discussing your concerns with the vet when Binx goes in for the rabies shot.
