My cat's head smells like maple syrup. Should I worry about diabetes?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 years and 5 months old | 10.6 lbs

my 12 y/o indoors only neutered male cat on the top of his head smells like maple syrup nothing I know of could cause this around house so I want to know if it is something to worry about? I read something unreliable that it could be diabetes and want a more reliable answer?

Hello, I wouldn't worry about the smell of maple syrup alone. Bart probably rubbed his head on or rolled in something fragrant. Signs of diabetes in cats include increased thirst and urination and increased appetite combined with weight loss. If Bart is experiencing these signs, a veterinary exam and bloodwork would help confirm a diagnosis. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
