Why is my young cat suddenly lethargic, not eating, and vomiting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

my one year old cat has suddenly become very lethargic, will not eat and gagged at the smell of food placed in front of him. Yesterday on 09/15/2019, late in the evening, he apparently vomited multiple times and has since become very inactive and has been hiding under my wife's desk. He is somewhat responsive, still has all of his senses but his reaction has become more dull.

The most common reason for symptoms you are describing in a young cat is an intestinal obstruction. Young cats often eat things they shouldn't (like hair ties, rubber door stop ends, strings, etc). I suggest you have him examined by your vet. This can be very serious. ( http://www.petcoach.co/article/foreign-bodies-in-the-small-intestine-of-cats/ )

I would be worried that Myloe is sick. A bloated abdomen can indicated ileus, pancreatitis, general gastritis, blockage or neoplasia. Since it is a long list with varying degrees of severity, I would recommend to take him in for an exam to see if a cause can be determined. The veterinarian will likely recommend blood work and possibly radiographs. Since he is not drinking, dehydration can set in with a day so I would take him to the veterinarians today. Good luck with Myloe!
