Why is my Quaker parrot chewing its feathers? How to stop it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parrot | Male | unneutered | 3.5 lbs

Hello, lately I've noticed that it looks like my Quaker Parrot has been chewing off their flight feathers, but the there is no plucking. I'm worried about this destructive behavior and was wondering how I can stop this before it gets worse. They act perfectly fine despite this!

Thanks for reaching out about Miso and including photos. Psittacine Feather Destructive Behavior can have many causes: stress, nutritional deficiencies, some viral diseases, external parasites (mites, lice) and other problems. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Provide more distractions toys, give showers to induce bathing, check and correct nutrition. These are all things to try. Good luck.
