My puppy ate plastic toy parts. What symptoms mean I need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltipoo | Female | 4 months and 8 days old | 5.8 lbs

Just discovered my 4 month old pup may have eaten part of her plastic toy and possibly the squeaker as I can't find any of the missing parts. Will she just pass them without any problems? What do I watch for? Thank you. Joy Hill

Hello Joy, Unfortunately, there is no way for us to tell you if she will pass these parts with no problem. There are too many variables involved. Some dogs do pass these things and sometimes they get stuck in the GI tract somewhere. I suggest you have her to your vet for an exam. That is your best option. They can x-ray her and see if there are any abnormal items in her stomach. If you don't want to take her in now, then monitor her closely for: * not eating * vomiting * lethargy If any of those are noticed she needs to see a vet ASAP.

It looks like she may have chewed up something plastic, but it's hard to tell what it may have been. Keep an eye on her and make sure she continues to eat, drink and eliminate normally and she is her normal self. If she shows any sign of illness, get her in to see your vet right away.
