Why does my cat have thin fur and sores between her back legs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat has developed a patch of thin fur between her backs legs and I’ve noticed she has sores on it. Could anyone help identify what could be wrong?

Louise could have developed this lesion for several reasons including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get), over grooming or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for pets, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Check her for fleas using a flea comb around her lower back and between her hind legs. Protect the areas from licking or scratching (she may need to wear an elizabethan collar). If it doesn't start looking better within about a week or if it gets worse, have her examined by the veterinarian who may prescribe medications. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
