Is my dog lethargic & not eating due to rabies shot after being lost?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | 14 years and 4 months old | 30 lbs

Good morning, my 14 yr old beagle got out of the yard Fri she was gone for approx 48 hrs. I picked her up at the shelter yesterday. She was out all night Fri night. Shes not eating and drinking very little water. The shelter gave her a rabies shot. She's not very responsive. I know it was very traumatic for her she was just shaking in her kennel when I picked her up. Will a rabies shot make her not want to eat? Lethargic? Should I take her to a vet?

She could just be worn out but since you said she isn't very responsive, I would recommend to take her to the vet. The vet may want to run some blood work on her to ensure she didn't get into any toxins or poison while she was missing. They will also be sure she is well hydrated and doesn't need any additional treatment. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon. I am so glad you found her.
