My dog was cut by scissors while grooming. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 15 lbs

Roxy is 5 years old (aggressive) and was cut with scissors while I was cutting her hair. The cut is located on her side near armpit about 1 inch wide, there is a flap of skin hanging. Bleeding is minimal but increases as she becomes more active.

Hello, I recommend taking Roxy to her veterinarian. Its hard to say without an exam how deep the wound extends. If it is very superficial, it may heal fine on its own with time. If the wound is deep enough to enter the chest cavity, or if the lymph node in the armpit is involved, an infection could be much more serious. In the future, I recommend grooming her with clippers to avoid this scenario. It is unfortunately common for people to accidentally cut their dogs with scissors when doing home grooming. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
