Why is my new cat vomiting blood and throwing up constantly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 9 months old | 15 lbs

We just got our cat 9 days ago from a shelter. Starting last night she has started downing water and has thrown up 16 times from 9 PM to 6 am. She is now having blood in her vomit. What might be going on with our kitty?

Hello, Vomiting in cats can be due to an intestinal blockage, stomach inflammation, kidney disease, or pain. The amount of severe vomiting makes me worry that she possibly ingested something that is too large for her to pass, and may have an intestinal blockage that requires surgery. I recommend taking Chloe to her veterinarian as soon as possible. They will be able to best guide you after performing a physical exam. I hope this is helpful. Hello, Sorry to hear that Olivia has been vomiting. Vomiting in cats can be a sign of infectious disease or intestinal obstructions. I worry when cats are acting both lethargic and have a decreased appetite. If she is prone to eating string or toys, I'd be more concerned about a possible surgical obstruction. I'd recommend taking her to her veterinarian. They can guide you best after a physical exam and likely x-rays. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
