Why does my senior dog keep getting diarrhea despite vet checks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chesapeake Bay Retriever | Male | unneutered | 11 years and 6 months old | 141 lbs

Our 11 year dog is having diarrhea. He did the same thing 3 months ago. He starts out by trying to use the bathroom over and over again and then he finally started having diarrhea. He's not to this point yet, but last time, this diarrhea just ran out of him when he tried to get up or moved. Vet did bloodwork. One liver enzyme was very high but our vet didn't seem concerned. XRay and Stool sample were all fine. We've been trying to walk him twice a day just to get more exercise.

It could be related to his diet or stressful events. I would recommend calling the vet to let them know it is happening again. They may want to re-evaluate Max or just start him on medications. He may benefit from a daily probiotic, food for sensitive GI tracts, or a supplement like Proviable. Other possible causes for off and on diarrhea include intestinal parasites (even if stool exam was normal) or IBD.
