My dog has a facial lump with pus. Can I give human amoxicillin?

Pet's info: Dog | Catahoula Leopard Dog | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 40 lbs

Any ideas for me? Our blue dog had a small marble size lump on his face the other day, yesterday it was big as a golf ball, today it has a hole in the bottom of his jaw and seems to be letting out blood and pus. We live remote and the vet isn’t really an option. We cleaned his face with dettol and sprayed the area with pink horse spray. What else could I do for the big guy? I have some human amoxicillin in the fridge 500mg, can I give him that?

Yes, you can give the Amoxicillin but it may or may not help depending on what is causing the abscess. 500mg is on the high side of the dosing for a dog that size but I would give it. He needs 500mg every 12 hours and you need to do it for at least 7 days. If you don't give it correctly he may develop resistance to Amoxicillin and then it won't work next time you need it. Give it with food to minimize GI upset. If you do this treatment, the abscess clears but then comes back he will need to see a vet.
