My cat has a persistent fever and third eyelid. Is vet's plan okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Male | neutered | 3 years and 7 months old | 11 lbs

My Male 3 yr old cat has been running a low grade fever for 3-4 weeks now along with his third eyelid showing in both eyes. Very low appetite..Vet put him on Clavimox and Steriod/antibotics eye drops. No improvement. He then ran blood tests (see attached). He diagnosed him with Fever of Unknown Cause and he is now on Azithromycin. He said if the new medicine does not work he wants to run another specialized test that tests for about 12 illnesses. Do you agree with this course of treatment?

Hello. I think the Azithromycin was a good next choice for an antibiotic. Clyde's bloodwork is not indicative of anything significant, although one of his kidney parameters is elevated. Blood markers for chronic infection/inflammation are in the high normal range, too, but we would expect this with a chronic fever. If he does not respond to this go round of antibiotics, a disease panel may be necessary, but make sure your vet also sends off some blood smears to see if any blood parasites can be identified. I would also like to have the urine analyzed as well. I hope Clyde is feeling better soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
