My dog is coughing white frothy mucus but is still active. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | unneutered | 28 lbs

Ozzy our boxer dog keeps coughing up white frothy mucus but he is keeping his food down. When he wakes he will cough up this froth about 4 times and then settle down again. He is active and still likes walks and eating well. No temperature. This has only been 24 hours.

Poor Ozzy. Feed him a a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If this behavior continues on the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
