My senior Lab's chronic yeast infection won't go away. Help!

Oh my. Poor Chillidog. This appears to be a really bad bacterial infection and not a yeast infection in my professional opinion. Perhaps even a Staphylococcus infection. You should request from your vet to have a culture done of the skin so that you know what antibiotic will resolve this. And because if your pets age, a look at underlying causes is highly recommmended if there was no trauma to he skin hat may have caused this. The infection appears deep so I actually would not recommend continuing the topical antibiotic if this were my patient. Oral antibiotics are a must! I also would recommend an Elizabethan collar to prevent any licking or chewing, which will only make this worse. I really hope you can get a handle on Chillidogs skin infection quickly. Monistat is not likely to help in this case, you will need either a medicated shampoo to treat yeast infection or an oral antifungal medication, these are prescription only and you will need to take her to the vet in order to get them.

Poor girl. If the preliminary medications from your vet didn’t improve her condition, then it’s time to consider getting Xena a culture done of her ear to determine what medicaiton can clear things up. This is a specific test that will determine what medicaiton combination is needed to get rid of he infection. I also am not sure if your vet has tried Posatex ear medication yet, but this is strong ear medicaiton that can help with resistant infections. Also pain medicaiton (steroids work well for ears when they are really inflamed) can also be prescribed by your vet to help with Xena’s discomfort. Hi, thank you for using Boop by Petco. Skin issues can certainly be frustrating. If Mocha isn't responding to the therapy her vet prescribed, please contact them to discuss next steps. It is impossible to diagnose a skin condition from photos alone. Her vet may recommend doing cytology, fungal culture and/or skin scrapes to determine the cause of her infection. In some cases referral to a veterinary dermatologist may be recommended for difficult cases. Sometimes there is underlying endocrine disease or allergies that may require bloodwork to diagnose. In the meantime, a diet for sensitive skin is always a good idea for dogs with recurrent skin infection. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Be. If you are being mocked by your veterinarian, then I suggest finding another veterinarian with whom you can have a better relationship. That is a terrible eay to feel! Apoquel and Cytopoint are two newer veterinary drugs that can help to mange seasonal allergies if that is the case. They control itching and can potentially help with ear infections. Diet should be evaluated as well as this can contribute to chronic ear infections. I hope this information helps!

The e collar is key to preventing licking, so great to hear you are taking such good care of her! New advances are being made in the allergy world for our pups as well. Things like Apoquel and cytopoint (an oral and an injection, respectively) are now available for our pets and have made a WORLD of difference for many of my clients. If you have not discussed this with your veterinarian-it's time! Why're great. For the sore areas-until you can get her in to be seen-you can apply triple antibiotic ointment twice daily to deter further bacterial infections, just make sure she cannot lick any of it off. Poor Sophie! Yeast infections on the skin are such a frustrating and usually long term problem. They usually stem from some type of allergy. I would recommend to get her on a hypoallergenic diet like science diet z/d ultra. I would also get her on a safe long term allergy medicine like apoquel or cytopoint. I have some dogs that need both to help control allergies. These are safe to give long term compared to steroids. Also, I would talk to your vet about a medicated shampoo like miconahex shampoo. This has an anti-fungal in it. I would try to bathe her 2-3 times per week. Also, tou can start her on an omega 3 fatty acid like vetriscience 369 (see link below). Finally, if the yeast can’t be controlled with these methods, you may consider talking to your vet about keeping her on terbinafine, an anti-fungal, long term. There is a dose where you can give it daily for a month and then twice a week long term and dermatologists believe it is safe. But I would only resort to that if nothing

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Millie! If Millie has an infection, be it yeast or bacteria, she needs to be on either an antibiotic or an antifungal (for the yeast). If the steroids are not working I would discuss weaning and stopping them and ask to start apoquel or cytopoint for the scratching. If Millie has skin allergies you should get her either on a prescription hydrolyzed diet (royal canin HP, Purina HA or Hill's z/d) or an over the counter novel protein diet (chicken is the most common allergen, not grains) of either venison or fish. If you are looking for a weight loss diet there are prescription diets as well. Millie sounds pretty miserable with her skin and she should see your Vet to discuss the next steps in trying to get this under control. I've attached a link to some shampoos you can try. If you are observing skin lesions and an odor he may have both a bacterial and yeast infection. While some cases can be treated topically and with medicated shampoos, more severe cases often requires oral antibiotic and antifungal therapy. As a first line therapy, start with a medicated shampoo that can be used for both yeast and bacterial infections such as Malaseb or Virbac or products recommended by your veterinarian.
