My dog won't eat his adult food. Should I change his protein?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 22 days old | 47 lbs

Hi, I just transitioned Luke from puppy to adult food as per a vet on here. I did this as he was refusing to eat his puppy kibble. I fear though that he is tired of chicken as I continued the same protein with the adult food and he is not thrilled with the adult food either. Should I try a new protein at this point? What do you suggest?

New protein means usually a different taste so you can certainly try to differentiate with fish or beef. I would recommend to feed him with a commercial good quality diet two times daily. Once you find anything that he likes, I would recommend to keep the same diet.

I don't recommend to change the protein at this point but instead to change the brand. Two of the most palatable diets are Royal Canin and Purina ProPlan. do make sure to slowly transition this diet change. Additionally, if Luke is only 9 months old, you may continue him on a puppy for until he is 12 months old although some vets may transitions pets a little sooner. One thing you want to not do is make Luke a finicky eater.
