What is this hard, dry, bark-like growth embedded on my chihuahua?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Long Coat) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 4 months old | 4 lbs

Hi, I'm hoping you can help me please. I've been working away the last 6 weeks and have just arrived home. I was told my long haired chihuahua had a insect bite but it looks more like a growth to me. Unfortunately I cant tell you when he got it as I've been away. It's very hard and dry to the touch, like tree bark. It looks like it's embedded in the skin. I'm so worried. He doesn't seem to be in pain but he has slept more than usual today but maybe I'm only thinking that as I'm worried.thank you

I’m sorry to hear that Marley has this problem. It is very hard to determine what is going on just based on that photo. I strongly recommend you have Marley to your veterinarian so they can take a look. Hopefully it’s just a skin infection that can be easily cleared up with antibiotics.
