Why is my cat scooting and PrettyLitter turning blue? Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 9 lbs

Hi! My cat finn just turned 1 year. He was neutered in June. He has scooted ever since. I took him back in a few weeks after neuterand the vet thought it was just a small scab that hadn't healed yet. From what I can tell he uses the litter box fine. But I use pretty litter and it's recently been turning blue. I have another cat but I don't think it's her leaving the blue litter. How soon do I need to get him seen? He acts 100% fine, except for scooting. Thanks!!

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Finn. The color blue can indicate an issue but it can mean something else. According to their website, "When PrettyLitter is at the end of its life cycle because the month is expiring or there isn't enough litter in the litter box to absorb urine and evaporate moisture, the urine can pool at the bottom of the litter box becoming concentrated and causing a reaction that changes the bottom of the litter blue." Given that he is acting 100% fine, it's not an emergency to rush him into a vet, but I would have him seen as soon as you can. I hope this helps!
