Why is my cat's eye discharging and breathing heavier than usual?

My cat has a lot of discharge in his eye. He seems to be breathing a little heavier than usual. He is not pawing at his eye or rubbing it against anything. Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 11 years and 8 months old | 20 lbs
