Why is my cat's eye discharging and breathing heavier than usual?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 11 years and 8 months old | 20 lbs

My cat has a lot of discharge in his eye. He seems to be breathing a little heavier than usual. He is not pawing at his eye or rubbing it against anything.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Burt. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian today. Any change in breathing in a cat can be significant and needs to be evaluated. He could have a respiratory tract infection causing the eye and breathing changes. His eyelids appear a bit swollen which can be seen with inflammation or infection in the eyes. I hope this information helps!
