My pig is lethargic, not eating, and vomiting. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Farm Animal | Pig | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 200 lbs

One of my kune kune pigs, which is normally very healthy and friendly, began showing a lack of interest in eating today, has been demonstrating lethargy, and threw up a light cream colored substance two times in a small amount. I just wanted to see if you have any suggestions until I can get him to his normal veterinarian office tomorrow. Thank you.

There are many things that can cause vomiting in pigs. I suggest you just hold him off food until you can get her seen by your vet. That way his stomach can rest. Have water available for him to drink but don't force him to take in water.

I am so sorry to hear about Cheese! I would check all over her body for any pain/swelling/bruising. Move her legs around and press on her belly to check for sensitivity. If she will allow you to look in her mouth look and see if there is food inside the mouth. If you see no little bits of food that is a sign that she has not been eating and is concerning. If you aren't sure if she has been urinating and having normal bowel movements I would clean the cage and then observe her closely today. If urine and bowel movements don't appear normal or she isn't eating or drinking, or if the lethargy continues she should see a vet right away as these little guys can decline quickly when they are ill.

I would recommend taking her to the vet tonight if you can. Usually by the time a guinea pig shows us they are sick they have been sick For a while and just hiding it. If you cannot tonight I would offer his his favorite treats to make sure he is eating and take her to the veterinarian tomorrow.

Thanks for reaching out about your guinea pig. Being lethargic is a signs of being ill, so a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Providing some heat support could give some comfort but does not replace the need for a veterinary visit. Continue to offer food and water through a syringe. Monitor fecal production and urination. Good luck.
