My small dog's nail is bleeding after quicking. Is it dangerous?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Long Coat) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 10 months old | 7 lbs

I’ve trimmed my dogs nails as usual this evening but she moved as I clipped her dew claw and have cut the quick. The bleeding has stopped and started a couple of times when she applies pressure but has stopped at the moment. She is a chihuahua weighing 3.2kg and I’m concerned if the blood loss is dangerous for her, so I need to contact my vet right away?

Try dipping the nail in styptic powder or cornstarch to see if that helps stop the bleeding. If it does not, I would contact Poppy's vet. The blood loss won't be enough to cause any serious problems, but it should be treated right away if you can't stop the bleeding. I hope this helps!
