My cat has conjunctivitis. Should I use eye ointment if he rubs it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 years and 2 months old | 14 lbs

My cat occasionally (maybe twice a year) gets conjunctivitis in one of his eyes. On a previous vet trip they prescribed an eye ointment, which my cat didn’t like and then rubbed his eye a lot after I applied it. So my question is whether or not to apply the ointment again. I don’t want him to irritate his eye more.

For now, have Banny wear an elizabethan collar. Thats the best way to protect his eye. The I recommend to call his vet and ask about using the eye ointment. Some ointment has a steroid and this will cause significant damage if an ulcer is present on the cornea. The vet may recommend to examine Banny again if they are concerned that an ulcer may be present. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
