Can I spay my cat even if her 12-week-old kitten is still nursing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 8 lbs

II want to get Sugar spaded and her 12 week old baby still suckels on her. How do I stop this. I have tried keeping them separated when I am gone and at night when we are sleeping. But, there are times during the day when I turn my back I catch him sucking on her. Most of the time she pushes him away , then there are times she allows it. This needs to stop so I can get her spaded. She was a feral kitty I brought in with her babies.

You can get Sugar spayed even though her kitten still tries to nurse. It's fine. When she is recovering, you should keep her in a large crate or a small room by herself to limit movement and allow healing, and that hopefully should break the habit of the kitten nursing. She will need to be alone for two weeks.
