My dog is throwing up dark vomit after eating bark. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shorthaired Pointer | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 25 days old | 50 lbs

While I was out of town and had a dog sitter Ruger my dog was throwing up on 2 days in a row. The throw up on the first day was dark almost red and had some mucous in it looked liked. The second day It was a lot more and was still darker brown. He also threw up all over the bed which he has never done. During this time he was still hyper and eating. It’s been 2 days since he threw up last but I am still worried.. side note.. he was chewing on wood bark the day before this started

Oh no, poor Ruger. If he was eating bark, it may have upset his stomach. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!

Withhold food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Wait at least an hour between feedings. If the vomiting persists, consider a recheck with a different veterinarian. If the vomiting stops, transition slowly to Elizabeth's regular diet. A bland diet can be plain white rice mixed with either cottage cheese, cooked/drained ground beef or boiled boneless/skinless chicken breast.

In a young pup, a full check up would be advisable given both vomiting and diarrhea. If he is bright and alert you could try a bland, intestinal prescription diet and a probiotic for no more than 48hrs without improvement

The problem is that the mulch could cause a blockage in Luke, or if it was made with cocoa hulls, there is a chance of poisoning. If the mulch was made with cocoa hulls, then I would take him into the vet now. Otherwise, you can monitor him for now given he's vomiting up the bark, and try a home remedy.
