Can my vaccinated dog get rabies from playing with other dogs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 5 months old | 40 lbs

How easy/difficult is it for diseases and rabies to transfer between dogs? My dog is all up to date on his vaccines, but was recently romping a lot with stranger dogs at the park and now I’m curious. There’s no broken skin but possibly saliva swapping. Thanks!

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Louis. I certainly understand your concern given how deadly rabies is, but if he is up to date with his rabies vaccines, there is no need to worry. He is fully protected and cannot get it. Rabies is transferred by bites, so a little saliva transfer won't be enough. I hope this helps!
