Why did my dog's hair grow back black and silky after a pimple?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkipoo | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

Our dog had a pimple and when the vet went to squeeze it, and it ended up breaking open UNDER the skin. Our dog was sick for days and we finally gave her a bath and just drained what we could from the pimple area in the bath tub. She was feeling better after that. Now the hair growing around the area where the pimple was has grown in black and silky. (You can see it in the attached picture.) What the heck? What's happening?

Hello. It is not uncommon when there has been damage to the hair follicles, that the hair can regrow a different color or even a different texture. I have seen pets that have sustained severe bites or burns regrow coats lighter or darker, but the most amazing one was a little short haired rat terrier that regrew a coat like a little lamb. It did stay this way for his life, but never seemed to affect him. I would not be too concerned as this is just the way Brownie's bodied repaired the damaged follicles. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
