My dog's nose is dark, crusty, and thickening. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 3 years and 1 month old | 17 lbs

There is a crusted, dark area at the top of my dog's nose that seems to be thickening. It's not evident in the photos, but when viewing the area head on from the front (and not from above) you can see that the thickened area is rather tall and is cracked down to the nose, giving the appearance of it growing from the surface of the nose. It appears to be skin that is firmly attached. What is this and why is it occurring? Is there any way to remove it and stop it from progressing? Thank you

I recommend to have Gary examined by the veterinarian. Lesions like this can be related to allergies or benign hyperplasia. Unfortunately, something more serious like an autoimmune condition is also possible. I recommend to play it safe and have him examined. The vet may try treatment or may recommend a biopsy based upon the physical exam. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
