My dog is hacking, eating grass, and vomiting. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 6 months old | 23.6 lbs

Last night, my dog started hacking like he had something stuck in his throat. At the same time, he started frantically eating grass every time I take him out. He threw up once, what looked like his partially digested dinner, but kept eating grass. He woke me up whining this morning, which is unusual, and went out just to eat more grass. His bowel movement seemed normal. What's going on?

Hello, and thanks for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Sirius may have an upset stomach. Keep an eye on his stools - you may be seeing some diarrhea in the next day or two. I recommend feeding him small amounts of bland food today (white rice and boiled lowfat chicken). If you see any further vomiting, if his appetite decreases, or if diarrhea shows up, then I recommend bringing him in to the vet to be evaluated. He may need some supportive GI meds to turn around, or this could be the first sign of something more serious, such as a foreign body (something stuck in his GI tract), pancreatitis, etc. Hope this helps and he feels better soon!
