My dog has an embedded tick. Should I remove it or wait for Bravecto?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Just found what we think must be a tick with its head fully inside my 22-lb dog. We realized that we never gave him his Bravecto chewable (I was in the hospital after an accident and we completely forgot it this year!) so we gave it to him now. The flyer says it will kill the tick in 12 hrs but is that soon enough to protect him? Should we try to get the tick off?

If you can't get him to a vet clinic to have the tick removed, you can try doing so at home by following the information at the link below: https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/how-to-remove-tick-from-dog/ I recommend you wear gloves while removing the tick and wash your hands after removing it, as ticks can carry diseases that are transmissible to humans. Put the tick in an airtight container to take to your vet so they can identify it and see if it is one of the kinds that can carry Lyme disease or other diseases.
