Does food added to my dog's kibble count as diet or 10% treats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 7 years and 2 months old | 17 lbs

If I’m adding 1/2 cup to my dogs food every day to her kibble, will I count that towards the 10% of extras in her diet or do I count that as part of her diet? please explain, thank you!

If you are adding 1/2 cup of food to her diet then that counts towards her diet. Treats should only be less than 10% of the dogs diet b/c they are generally higher in calories. Also considering Chloe's age, I would recommend getting her on a senior diet if not done so already. I hope that this helps answer your question. Best of luck with your pet Chloe moving forward. Take care.

You don't have to give Chloe any veggies. You can give them as an occasional snack, but her kibble will provide all the nutrients she needs to be healthy. I would cut back in the veggies and give her slightly more kibble :-)

Hello. It sounds like you are giving her a good diet and the plan you have outlined looks like a nice balanced diet. I would just confirm that the diet you are feeding (the kibble) is a good diet that is high in fibre and low in fat for Chloe. Ask your vet what they recommend in the area you are in, but it sounds like you are doing a good job!
