My cat has diabetes, but insulin isn't working. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 8.7 lbs

My cat was diagnosed with diabetes but is not responding to insulin injections. We’re trying to determine if she has the insipidus form of the disease, or if she is insulin resistant. Question 1 : what effect does giving insulin to an insipidus patient have? Question 2: does the inability to concentrate urine affect blood glucose levels?

Hi there. If Tinkerbell has elevated blood glucose levels (which I'm assuming she does, if she was diagnosed with diabetes), then she does indeed have diabetes mellitus - diabetes insipidus is not generally confused with diabetes mellitus, since affected cat would have normal glucose levels. So this should not be an issue. If you still have questions, feel free to post again with copies of her lab work that was used to diagnose her originally. No, having an inability to concentrate urine does not affect blood glucose levels.
