Can a Seresto collar cause skin irritation or bumps on my dog?

A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). This is not likely to be due to the collar. If the collar were to cause irritation, it would only be around where the collar is placed and would not cause severe itching. Severe itching is often due to one of the following things: 1) Allergies - this can happen suddenly and is usually due to an environmental (i.e pollen) cause. 2) External parasites - fleas, lice and mites can all cause intense itching. It's good to check him for fleas and get other treatment if needed. 3) Over-bathing, or using the wrong product for bathing - Bathing too often can cause the skin to get dry and irritated. Dogs should normally be bathed no more than once a month with a shampoo that is labeled for dogs. If you bathe more than that, or use a shampoo or soap that is meant for people, then you could be damaging the normal protective barrier of the skin. The rubbing collar can set up inflammation and an environment for bacterial or yeast infection. The itching can cause inflammation that could cause something like a bump. I would recommend that you have Chester examined by a vet to see what exactly is going on. The vet may recommend anti-inflammatories or antibiotics or topical medications depending on what is really going on. Until Chester sees the vet, the best thing you can do is to keep him from scratching, so he may need to wear sock or pet shoes or a shirt that covers the area.

It could be that Tiberius (love his name!) is suffering from an allergic skin reaction to the pheromone collar, and these lumps are hives. Given how fast they came up, I would take him into a vet now. The vet can prescribe him an antihistamine or steroids to stop the reaction.

Other possibilities include a bacterial skin infection, trauma from scratching, fungal infection, mites, an internal organ problem, among many other things. If the condition worsens, persists, spreads, or is really itchy I would advise letting your vet take a look at Macy. They can get a detailed history, do a thorough exam, and then advise some tests if needed. Skin tests include skin scrape, woods lamp exam, fungal culture, skin cytology, etc. If they felt like this problem was due to an internal organ problem, they may advise some tests which could include fecal/blood/urine tests and maybe even some x-rays. Your vet can decide whether the Seresto collar is involved or not. If it is, I would report this to Bayer Animal Health or have your vet report it. Good luck with Macy.

Be sure to read the package insert to ensure you are putting it on correctly. It needs one snug but not too tight. The seresto collar works really well from my experience. She could be itching from other types of allergies or as a secondary reaction from the fleas prior to using the collar. You could try Benadryl twice a day to see if it helps. See link below. If it isn’t improving I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to determine the cause of the itching and make sure she doesn’t have anything else going on. Yes it would be ideal to remove the collar and use another type of flea treatment, waiting at least a couple of weeks (you can use comfortis tablets). It is very likely that both the scab and the hair loss is due to the collar which is causing skin reaction/allergy.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! There have been reports of extreme itchiness and hair loss from the Seresto collar. If Raven is having a reaction to the collar it should be removed and no longer used. I recommend changing to Bravecto, which is a topical flea and tick medication that is applied every 3 months. If his skin is raw he should see a Vet for antibiotics and steroids. I wish you the best!

With the exception of Seresto collars ( https://www.petbasics.com/cat-products/seresto-for-cats/?pref=cat ), flea collars do not work well for cats and can cause skin irritation, so I do not recommend them for cats. I would consider removing the flea collar and see if the skin lesions go away. If you have also applied a topical flea medication that should work better than the flea collar. She could have a bacterial skin infection associated with the flea allergy dermatitis. Since it is not responding to the treatments that you have tried, she should be examined by a vet for treatment. She may need a corticosteroid, antibiotic, and an anti-histamine to treat. Your vet can also recommend an effective flea control regime to help prevent fleas. The best thing is to use a monthly flea prevention, like NexGard, Frontline, Advantage to help control the fleas.
