My 15lb dog ate a sugar-free mint. Is xylitol poisoning a concern?

Hey, my dog just ate a sugar free mint. I read online that most sugar free products contain xylitol and that xylitol can be poisonous to dogs. My dog is about 15 pounds. Should I be worried?

Hi there. Yes, if the mint contained xylitol, this is very concerning as it only takes a very small amount to be toxic - especially in a small dog. I would recommend looking up the brand name of the mint online to check the ingredient list. If xylitol is listed as an ingredient, you need to take her to the vet immediately for treatment.

If the sweetener contained xylitol as the ingredient then that can be toxic to dogs and affect their blood sugar and liver. Because she is so small it may have been enough to affect her. If it did not contain that ingredient then it is unlikely to cause any problems
