My old chihuahua has a hard eye lump. Why can't he open his eye?

My chihuahua has a large hard lump under his eye. I’ve been watching it and it doesn’t seem to causing any pain but today it’s gotten so big he can’t open his eye. He’s old not too sure how old but he’s old. No teeth he’s lost most of them. He has a few in the back. Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

Poor Brody! There are a number of different things that could cause a swelling like this - it could be an abscess (possibly related to an infected tooth), some kind of inflammatory reaction, or even some type of tumor. This should definitely be checked out by your veterinarian in person, so I would recommend taking him in for an exam as soon as you're able to. He/she can take a closer look at the area and will advise you on what kind of treatment is needed.
