My unspayed cat is in heat, but acting strangely. Is she sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female

Cat is acting very strange, she's about 3 years old, not spayed, generally is affectionate, but has been hiding and skittish for about 2 or 3 days. What's going on with her? She eats and drinks normally, uses the litter box fine, her gum and tongue color is normal, she sleeps more upright versus on her side, meows constantly. I know she's in heat but this behavior is completely odd for her.

One thing I noted is that Bella is sleeping more upright than on her side and meows constantly. I'm wondering if she is in pain, and that's also why she is hiding. I'd have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning for a health check.
