Why does my dog have scabs on his head if steroids didn't work?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 55 lbs

Dog had little bumps on his head that feel like scabs. No puss he doesn’t itch them. No fleas. Vet put him on a steroid that didn’t do anything. He was taking a prescription for Apoquel because he licks his feet a lot but hasn’t taken during the steroid taking period.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Henry. This could be something such as superficial bacterial folliculitis, which causes scabs and bumps. This typically occurs due to underlying problems such as allergies, which he must have if he was on Apoquel. It seems like his allergies may not be controlled if he's getting this issue, so I would take him back into the vet. I'm not sure if Apoquel worked for him, but if it did, it might be advisable to put him back on it. Another drug option for allergies is Cytopoint, which you can ask your vet about. I hope this helps!
