Dog's cone off after CCL surgery. Is incision infected? Ice it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 110 lbs

My dog managed to get his cone off while at work. It’s been 8 days since his CCL Tightrope surgery and the incision looked great before. He is on antibiotics already as a preventative but should I be worried and take him in? It just happened so I’m letting it dry out. Should i ice it? Please help I’m so worried about infection

Place the e-collar back on him. Have him rechecked by your veterinarian. He may need a few more staples to keep the site fully closed. Consider Bitter Apple Spray, Fooey or other deterrent ( https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/category/dog/dog-training/dog-training-repellents-and-attractants ) around the site to further prevent licking. A cold compress applied for 10 minutes 2-3 times a day may ease any discomfort. Continue to restrict activity to just leash walks for eiimination.
