Could pink circles, hair loss, and black grit on my dog be fleas?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 8 years and 4 months old | 102 lbs

Our dog has never had fleas but stays with a women who watches several dogs. He has round pink circles (size of dimes) with black grit at base of hair and is losing hair in those areas.

Hi there. The black grit you are describing sounds like it may be flea dirt (flea poop), and the base of the tail is a common area to see this if your dog has fleas. So I would be concerned that Jackson may have picked some up. I would recommend getting him started on a good quality flea control medication like Nexgard or Bravecto - you can get these from your veterinarian, or order them online with a prescription from your vet.
