Why is my puppy's heat lasting so long with swelling and lethargy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 7 months old | 45 lbs

I noticed my 9 month old puppy start bleeding vaginally June 14 (assuming its her first heat), she is still bleeding presently and her vulva is just now swelling to a massive size. Even when she was bleeding during June and July (no dripping, only bled when peeing very heavily) she had the zoomies around 4 times a day; she hasn’t had the zoomies in 2 weeks and has been dripping nonstop since August started. A normal heat should not be lasting a couple months. Her mood just started changing. Help

Hi. Yes a heat should not last that long or cause her lethargy. I would be concerned she is having an abnormal hormone balance, or uterine infection, which can be life threatening. The best thing would be to have her seen now at ER and to get her spayed ASAP
