My new bird is terrified and plucking feathers. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Male | 5 months and 29 days old | 5 lbs

I just got Robin and (I don’t really know his gender or weight since we just got him) and he has been terrified of us which is normal. But I’ve notice that he has started to pluck his feathers which is a bad sign. We can’t entertain him or give him something to do because he doesn’t trust us. And we can’t take him to a vet because he won’t let us touch him. What do we do?

Thanks for reaching out about Robin and including photos. Feather picking behavior can be due to multiple causes including stress, feather parasites (lice, mites), metabolic disorders (liver, kidney), infectious diseases (viral, bacterial), contact allergies and others. A veterinary visit is recommended, and you might have to utilize a hand towel to restrain and transport to a travel cage. As for trust, that just takes time, especially if not originally hand fed. Keep movements slow and deliberate. Good luck.
