Why does my budgie have a bloody lump on its tail near a dead feather?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | unneutered

Hi, my Budgie of 8 years has a strange looking bulb filled with blood on the base of his tail. Connected to this blood looking bulb is what looks to be a dead feather, it's grey and black and shriveled. I don't know what this is?

Thanks for reaching out about Budgie and including photos. This could be a feather cyst, other inflammation or infection. A veterinary visit should be scheduled to assess. Monitor Budgie for any indication of discomfort or pain, monitor appetite. Try applying a warm compress to see if can shrink mass. Good luck.

Without actually seeing it my best guess would be a feather cyst. You would have to take him to a vet for an exam to get an exact diagnosis. ( https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/feather-cysts-in-birds )
