My dog stepped on something, licking paw & limping. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | 10 years and 7 months old | 8 lbs

My dog just stepped on something. I am not sure if it was a rock or maybe got a bee sting but she has been licking at her paw for about 45 minutes, limping and pacing. I do think i see a bump on her paw and i think i saw a little blood but I cleaned that off. I dont notice any swelling she just seems uncomfortable. What can I do? Should I gauze her paw and get her a cone? She is an 8 lb chihuahua mix

Poor Potato! Yes, I would gently clean her paw with water water and antiseptic soap, then bandage it, and put an Ecollar on her. Do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Change in the bandage daily, and if she is still limping after 48 hours, or the bump gets bigger, have her seen by a vet.
