Why is my old hamster breathing heavily? Is he sick or just old?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 3 months old

My Hammie has a rough coat texture and breathes quite heavily. He drinks and eats plenty, and rests more often due to his age. I would like to know how much approximately he has to live? :( he looks healthy to me but very old... should I expect my best friend to pass away sooner? I know that syrian hamsters live up to 2.5 years I think.

Thanks for reaching out about Vasia and including photos. It is impossible for us to determine how long he will remain with you but if having breathing difficulties, a veterinary visit could prolong his quality of life. Respiratory infections or heart disease are possible manageable conditions. Good luck.
