My dog's kidney failure symptoms returned after stopping cortisone. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 10 months old | 11 lbs

A month ago my dog started vomiting and became lethargic. He got muscle tremors his stomach was swollen and his skin was tight and hard as though he was always tense. Couldnt even get up to walk. Vet said his kidneys collapsed and little chance to recover. We started Vibramycin, no change. Started cortizone and he appeared fullt healthy. His kidney tests appeared much better almost healthy. Now we have to stop the cortizone after 20 days and the first day without it he has same symptoms.

If the cortisone is helping to stabilize his condition, then I would opt to perhaps continue it, but at a lower dose perhaps. It is hard to say without all the lab findings and everything, but kidney typically respond in most cases to diuresis, anti-nausea medication and a prescription kidney diet, so something isn't quite adding up here. A urinalysis, repeat bloodwork and possibly even an ultrasound may be needed to get more information and perhaps shed some light as to why Snow is responding to steroids well. Also continuing the steroids may be the best course of action here if he responded in such a positive way. I hope that your furry friend Snow is able to stabilize his condition soon! Best wishes and take care.
