What causes dry skin and hair loss on my pet's leg from dragging?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 5 months and 26 days old | 4 lbs

Hi, I noticed this patch of dry skin on his leg where there’s not much hair growing, and was wondering what it might be. He didn’t react to me touching it, so I don’t think it hurts. He has CH, so he’s dragging himself around a lot so I thought it might be from friction on the floor, but wanted a professional opinion and any info on what I can do about it if it’s a problem.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Udon. If he's dragging himself on the floor, this patch of dry skin could be caused by this. I'd leave it be for now, but if the area gets bigger or worse, then have him seen by a vet to have it treated. Best of luck,
