Is it safe to adopt an FIV cat if I have a suppressed immune system?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Male | neutered | 2 years old | 3 lbs

Hi was just wondering if the small amount of info I found online is accurate. I was considering adopting a 5 year old cat with FIV, but I have an immunodeficiency myself and take daily and monthly medicine to suppress my immune system. I read that that would be bad for me and for the cat, since we would both be more susceptible to infections. Is that true? Please let me know, thanks!

You would need to check with your doctor to see if this would be a problem for you, as that's human medicine which we aren't qualified to answer. As for the cat, there are not very many illnesses humans and cats can pass back and forth, so the cat should be fine.
