How to treat a large dog's open, draining chest ulcer until vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mastiff | Male | neutered | 8 years and 10 months old | 220 lbs

My Mastiff has had skin lumps, similar to hair sac but now he has one on his chest that looks like an open ulcer, large and drains, smells horrible. I am trying to get him to my vet but he has to be sedated as he hates the vet, and he is 200+ lbs so i have to get someone to help me get him there. How can i treat it until i can get him to vet? It is in a place I can't wrap between his front legs in the hanging skin area.

Poor guy. I would recommend cleaning it with an antiseptic like Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water OR Chlorhexidine solution 3% or 2% diluted with water until light blue mixture. This will help keep the area clean until you can get him in to see your vet. You can try placing an oversized t-shirt on him to help keep the area from being rubbed constantly when he lays down. I would not cover this completely if it is already infected. Best of luck to you and I hope that Dude's ulcerated mass can be successfully treated soon! Take care.
