My dog has an injured ear from a fight. What can I do at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Female | spayed

Our larger dog and smaller dog usually get along well, but burst out in violent fights every so often. As a result, our small dog gets injured. Recently she’s suffered a wound behind her ear. It appears to be really bothering her as she won’t let me go near it without whining. There’s also some brownish discharge oozing from the wound. What should I do? I’ve asked my mother to take her to the vet ASAP, but in case she ends up forgetting, is there something I can do in the interim?

Hello. I am sure this must hurt, but you do need to try & clean things up the best you can until she is seen by a veterinarian. You can just gently clean the wound with warm water. If you have any skin antiseptic like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ) then clean things up with this. Do not use soap as you will have a tough time getting all the soap out of her coat. Then, remind your mom you need to take Stella to the vet. She may need antibiotics. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
