What to do if my dog's anal gland is sticking out? Vet or groomer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years and 7 months old | 14 lbs

I believe that my pups anal gland is sticking out. Is it better to take him to a vet or is it ok with a groomer? And how lond can I wait if I take him in? I'm out of town right now and cannot see my provider right away. Thank you.

Unfortunately, I can't tell from the photo what is happening exactly. It sounds like Charlie needs to be examined by the veterinarian and I recommend to have that done today. Anal glands should never protrude. Abscesses and cancers are both possible if the gland looks like it is protruding. Both of these need to be addressed by the veterinarian. You may need to have someone take him to the vet for you or see a local veterinarian. Charlie should also wear an elizabethan collar at all times to prevent him from licking and traumatizing the area. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
