My kitten has green goop & trouble breathing. Is waiting for vet too long?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi! I found a kitten outside of my car today. Her eyes and nose are super green and goopy. I’ve taken care of a lot of kittens but I’ve never seen so much green goop come out of a kittens nose like this before. She’s also super congested and underweight. She’s purring and cuddling up on me and loves to be pet, but her breathing is making me nervous. I planned on taking her to the vet tomorrow as soon as possible, but her breathing is making me nervous. How can I tell if that’s too long of a wait

Hi. Poor little kitten. Thank you for taking care of her. It sounds like she has a pretty severe upper respiratory infection and we'll need antibiotics and are there treatments. If her breathing is concerning you I would recommend the ER. If you think she can wait until tomorrow, but you could try now to help open up the Airways is Place her in a bathroom with the door closed and the shower running very hot and making it steamy in my bathroom for about 15 minutes. This will help break up some of the discharge and hopefully help her breathe better. But my recommendation would be the ER.
