My dog with heart disease is wheezing. Should I go to the ER vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cairn Terrier | Female | spayed | 12 years and 7 months old | 17 lbs

My dog has congenitive heart disease. She was off her vetmedin for about 24 hours and she’s now wheezing again like she was when she was first diagnosed. She’s been back on it with one 2.5mg dose at breakfast and another tonight at dinner. She had been wheezing on and off all day. I’m not sure if I should take her to the emergency vet or just let the medicine kick back in. She’s breathing at about 68 breaths a minute but her gums are pink and the wheezing is intermittent lasting 15-20 seconds.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Bindi. Poor girl, I'm concerned about the amount she is breathing (breaths per minute) and the wheezing. Breathing issues can quickly become serious and life threatening, so I think it is best she sees a vet now. Please take her into an ER vet now. Best of luck.
